Wordpress Mobile Edition 3.0b1 beta released

by Kunal Jain on Mar.06, 2009, under blogs

Wordpress celebrity Alex King just sent out a twitter update about the latest beta release of his excellent Wordpress Mobile Edition plugin.  This plugin enables Wordpress blogs to auto-generate a stripped down mobile version when being accessed by mobile browsers.

One of the main goals of my website Recipe Mobile was to enable readers to access recipes from anywhere using their mobile phone and I had researched a lot of ways to achieve this when setting up Recipe Mobile over a month ago.

I had tested an older version of Wordpress Mobile Edition but I found it lacking in certain functionality.  I ended up going with the Mobile Press plugin mainly because it used different CSS when being accessed by the Opera safari browser and the Iphone safari browser that made the website look better on those screens.  Also, Mobile Press included an effective search bar in the mobile display.  However, I have been anxiously waiting for an update to Mobile Press as I realized that it detects the IE 8.0 browser as a mobile browser and displays the mobile version of the website.  Also, Mobile Press is incompatible with WP Super Cache.  The WP Super Cache plugin allows Wordpress blogs to display a faster cached version of the website to returning users.  Considering that Recipe Mobile will eventually be image heavy, it is important that I optimize it as much as possible to reduce load times.

The 3.0b1 beta version of Wordpress Mobile Edition is compatible with WP Super Cache and it also has separate themes for advanced browsers and makes use of the touch functionality for those phones that have them.  Also, its admin page allows complete control of which browsers it will detect and act upon.  All these improvements definitely will make it the most effective mobilizing software available.

I will be testing Wordpress Mobile Edition on Recipe Mobile soon to see if it delivers on its promises.  I hope readers will access my website from their mobile browsers and report any issues here.
